Similar to last year, we have assigned one or more seminarians to visit each parish in the diocese for the collection, and when possible, accompanied by a retired priest. The assigned seminarian will be present on the altar at the parish during one or more of the Masses during the assigned weekend. Many thanks in advance to these men for their cooperation and help in advancing this collection.

Currently projected financial funding for our retired priests (and for the remainder of us who will retire) for the next ten years is underfunded by $1.3 million. For our seminarians, the “financial picture” is even more challenging. Currently projected financial funding for the next ten years is underfunded by $4.1 million, leaving the future funding for formation of men for priesthood a grave concern here in the Diocese of Yakima.

In 2015, your marvelous response to the Special Collection for Priest Retirement and Seminarian Education resulted in the Church collecting a total of $201,000 towards funding these two most important needs. God has indeed blessed His local Church with generous hearts!

Method of Handling this Special Collection:

  1. A pulpit announcement exhorting generosity, use of displayed posters, and placement of envelopes in pews.
  2. As with all special collections, we are asking that all funds collected be processed through each parish.  Checks need to be made payable to the individual parishes, with a notation on the check that the funds are to go to the Special Collection for Priest Retirement and Seminarian Education. Your parish would issue a single check, made payable to the Diocese of Yakima, and mailed to the Pastoral Center. Pledge Donations which indicate a credit card payment and cannot be processed in your parish, please mail to Diocese of Yakima Att: Darci Heinlein at 5301 Tieton Dr. Suite A, Yakima, WA 98908. We would also encourage your office to forward a receipt to the parishioner for their donation.

Thank you for your help in this most important matter.
