Our History

  •     Catholicism first came to Central Washington in 1847.
  •     The Diocese of Yakima was created on June 23, 1951, by Pope Pius XII.
  •     The new diocese was formed from the territory of the Archdiocese of Seattle and the Diocese of Spokane.
  •     The Diocese of Yakima serves 41 parishes in 7 counties.
  •     The original diocesan newspaper began as Our Times in 1959.

The Department of Ministry and Education assists the Bishop in his pastoral mission of teaching and promoting catechesis and education as a life-long process of total Catholic education that has, at its heart, evangelization. The Ministry and Education Center Directors and Staff work collaboratively with parishes and other diocesan institutions to serve the Church's educational and catechetical ministries.
