Our History

  •     Catholicism first came to Central Washington in 1847.
  •     The Diocese of Yakima was created on June 23, 1951, by Pope Pius XII.
  •     The new diocese was formed from the territory of the Archdiocese of Seattle and the Diocese of Spokane.
  •     The Diocese of Yakima serves 41 parishes in 7 counties.
  •     The original diocesan newspaper began as Our Times in 1959.

Ministry

1989 Ordained an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of San Francisco 1997 Installed as Sixth Bishop of the Diocese of Yakima

2011 Retired; In Residence in Diocese of Yakima

Active Member in the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)

1990 - Present Consultant for NCCB Committee on Hispanic Affairs

1990 - 96 Member of NCCB Committee on Marriage and Family Life

1991 - 94 Chairman of NCCB Committee on Religious Life and Ministry

1995 - 2001 Member of NCCB Committee on Social Development and World Peace Domestic Policy

1998 - 01 Member of USCCB Catholic Campaign for Human Development

2000 - 04 Chair, Bishops’ Sub-Committee for Hispanic Liturgy
