Tony’s who has kept us posted on his condition.  The Cathedral has a live webcam, available at the following address:  http://www.ballinaparish.org/webcam.html

Please note that after Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday, there will be a seven-hour time difference, so the funeral time in Ireland on Monday will be at 5:30 a.m. here.

Father Hannick was born January 6, 1924, in Ardnaree, Ballina in County Mayo, Ireland, to John and Margaret (Monaghan) Hannick.
He attended high school in Limerick and college in Waterford before entering St. Richard’s Seminary, Kilkenny, in 1954.  Following graduation he was ordained a priest in Kilkenny, on June 8, 1958, for service in the Diocese of Yakima.  He served as parochial vicar of Christ the King Parish in Richland until 1961, then as pastor of St. Francis de Sales Parish in Chelan until 1968, and finally as pastor of Holy Redeemer Parish in Yakima until 1979.  He then served as an intern at the National Institute of Mental Health in 1979-1980, and finally as a chaplain with the Veteran’s administration in Virginia, and California, until his retirement on December 31, 1993.

Other assignments in the Diocese included being moderator of the CYO for the southern deanery, diocesan ecumenical liaison, and moderator for the Council of Catholic Women.

Rice Bowl Donations Help Poor in Lesotho

“I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it.”

rEFLECTION_week3_1
This week we visit the Rametsi family, who live in Lesotho, a tiny country surrounded by South Africa. Although it has a population of only 2 million people, Lesotho has the third-highest HIV prevalence rate in the world. As a result, the number of orphaned children continues to rise and outpace communities’ ability to care for them. Chronic poor harvests and high prices mean most people struggle to feed their families.

Good Friday Collection Helps Holy Land

Dear Fathers,

For the first time in many years, all the parishes in the Diocese of Yakima will be participating in the Pontifical Good Friday Collection to help the Franciscans and other church groups that support the mission of the Church in the Holy Land.  Most parish envelope programs have Good Friday envelopes already; if your parish does not, please provide envelopes of some sort to your parishioners if they wish to have a record of their donation.  Please also make sure that your parishioners have an opportunity to make a donation at your Good Friday services, especially for the Veneration of the Cross.  I have attached a pulpit announcement, in English and Spanish.  Here is a link to a youtube video about the Collection: http://youtu.be/B0yhUGYDKZ0

Other resources for this collection may be found at: http://www.myfranciscan.org/good-friday/media-resources/  The collection should be remitted to the Finance Office in the manner of our other national special collections.

"We adore you,  O Christ and we praise you; because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world!"

Obituary for Father Neill Meany, S.J.

(Note: Saint Joseph Parish in Yakima will offer a Memorial Mass for Father Meany on Saturday, March 9, at 9 a.m.)

Fr. Neill R. Meany, S.J. died March 4, at the Jesuit infirmary in Spokane.  He was a dedicated priest and religious who poured out his life in humble and loving service as a Jesuit priest, teacher, artist, administrator, and friend to many.

The eldest of five siblings, Neill Richard Meany was born in Milbank, SD, on July 27, 1923 to Richard and Corinne (Plouf) Meany.  He graduated from Bellarmine Preparatory School, Tacoma, WA, in 1941 and entered the Jesuit Novitiate at Sheridan, OR, that same summer.  After completing his first set of studies in 1948, Neill returned to Bellarmine Prep to teach for three years.  While there his brother Bill was a student of his.  Neill went to Alma College in California for theology studies in 1951 and was ordained a priest on June 19, 1954, in Spokane.

With studies behind him Fr. Meany taught at Marquette High School in Yakima and Gonzaga Prep in Spokane, held administrative duties at the Jesuit Offices in Portland, and delved into parish life in Yakima, Granger, and Naches.  Ever mindful of the Hispanic people Fr. Meany spent a year in Mexico to learn Spanish to meet their spiritual and pastoral needs.

Principal Evaluation Process

Dear School Pastor and Principals:

Attached you will find the principal evaluation form as well as a faculty survey form.  You will notice that there is a place for the school pastor, the principal as well as the representative from the Office of the Bishop which is Father Tom Kuykendall.  I will be working with Father Tom on this portion of the evaluation.  This is meant to be a collaborative effort that assists each of our building leaders to grow in their leadership.

Know that we will be working with the school principals regarding some rubrics for teacher evaluations as well.  One of the real challenges I had when I was Catholic Schools superintendent in Seattle is that the schools were so varied and diverse that each principal tended to have evaluation tools crafted to their particular building.  This is even more the case here in the Diocese of Yakima where some schools cover pre-school through eighth grade and others are K-5 or K-6.  Some schools have aides in classrooms while others do not.  Some schools use department systems for certain subject areas with a rotation of teachers into a specific classrooms and others do not.  This is why the question of a teacher evaluation system is a little more complicated.

Should you require assistance regarding the forms or the overall personnel procedures you are free to call our vice-chancellor Diana Aparicio-Sosa who worked with me and our staff in getting these posted.  Besides the below attachment you will also notice that these forms are posted under the "Schools" pull-down box on the front web-page at yakimadiocese.org. Should you require assistance regarding your educational mission you are free to call Father Tom at his parish of St. Joseph in Wenatchee.

Again, I thank all of you for your consistent support of Catholic Schools here in Central Washington and I am especially grateful to our school principals who engage in the very challenging ministry of leading our mission of Catholic education.

Blessings,

+Bishop Joseph Tyson

Let Lenten Season Help Transform You

“This is my chosen Son; listen to him”.”

reflection week 2

Timor-Leste (East Timor), an island nation northwest of Australia, is one of the world’s newest countries. But its struggle for independence caused violence that left many poor, homeless or sick.

Catholic Relief Services works with impoverished Timorese people to improve their lives, by providing care for people with HIV and tuberculosis, training and resources for farmers, and peace-building programs that help foster reconciliation and cooperation among opposing groups.

Tri-Cities' Area Conference for Year of Faith

Dear Father,

Praised be Jesus Christ!

Taking up the call to undertake a new evangelization—“new in ardor, methods, and expression”—we invite you and your parishioners to participate in the Tri-Cities Encounter 2013.  Blessed John Paul II wrote that the “fundamental vocation and mission of a parish is to be a ‘place’ in the world for the community of believers to gather together as a sign and instrument of the vocation of all to communion…”  In keeping with that mission, the theme of this year’s encounter is: A Place for Us.
