Holy Father's Apostolic Exhortation

Dear Fathers:

It's always good to remember the universal and global nature of our Church.  With the constant coverage of the civil war in Syria as well as the wider events of the Middle East associated with the "Arab Spring," I'd like to provide you with links to our Holy Father's recent post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation titled: Ecclesia in Medio Oriente.  For the careful reader, this writing provides a theological and spiritual framework for more deeply reflecting on the events in this part of the world.

Immigration Update

Dear Father:

Attached is my letter to you regarding our local and national immigration reform efforts.  I hope you will forward this information to any parish social concerns committee, social justice committee, St. Vincent de Paul leadership or other key parishioners who have contact with those struggling with their documentation status.  In advance, I thank you for all your efforts on behalf of those of our brothers and sisters who lack documents.

Retired Religious Collection September 29-30

Dear Fathers,

Soon, our parishes will be conducting the annual collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious (RFR). I urge you to offer this appeal your prayerful and vocal support. Your efforts are vital to its success.  Despite the unparalleled generosity of Catholics to the Retirement Fund for Religious, the needs of elder religious remain profound. Rising healthcare and facility costs along with decreased income make it difficult for religious communities to furnish adequate care for senior members. The RFR offers financial assistance and services that help religious communities provide for the ongoing needs of their elder members while continuing to focus on mission and ministry.  As you consider this year’s appeal, I ask you to reflect on the role of religious in your own life. Perhaps a woman or man religious nurtured your faith and your vocation to the priesthood. Or you may have ministered alongside a sister, brother, or religious order priest in a school, parish, or diocesan setting. I invite you to share these experiences with your parishioners or to consider hosting an RFR speaker. Most importantly, please announce the collection during Mass.  In thanksgiving for the faithful service of our senior religious and their many contributions to our Church and world, I ask for your heartfelt assistance. Above all, please join me in praying for God’s continued blessing on our nation’s elderly sisters, brothers, and religious order priests.

Please click on the links below to download letters, in English and Spanish, that can be read from the pulpit, placed in the bulletin, or provided to your people in another suitable fashion.

Faithfully in Christ,

+Bishop Joseph Tyson

For Your Marriage TV Spots

Dear Friends:

With our R-74 ballot initiative regarding the Washington State legislature's attempt to redefine marriage, it's good to keep up on some of the positive resources that we can share at parish meetings and catechetical settings in our local parishes.  Here's a very good video link from YouTube that shows the latest television spots on marriage from the USCCB's marriage web site.  Click here to view:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzIw6kf6AxE&feature=player_embedded

Dear Friends:

Catholic News Service has a newly launched video service which is free until December.  Below is a fine video link regarding future priests.  It's a short and engaging video on vocations.  This might make a good starter video for a catechist gathering or leadership meeting in your parish.  You might want to share this video with others as well.  Click here to connect:

Washington State Bishops Teaching Document On Marriage and R-74

Dear Friends:

Here is the copy of the joint statement of the Washington State Bishops on marriage in both Spanish and English.  I hope you will consider forwarding these materials to key leaders in your parish and school as well as those involved in catechetical formation programs.  You might also consider sending these home with your weekly school packets as well as any at-home materials your parents receive from their religious education programs.  In advance I thank you for your assistance in this important evangelization effort.

Upcoming Rite of Election

Dear Friends:

I am so grateful to have such a fine committee from a cross-section of parishes here in Central Washington working with me on the next Rite of Election as well as setting policies and procedures related to the RCIA process.  It is vitally important the clergy, religious and lay catechists review this letter regarding the upcoming Rite of Election as well as the broader questions on the RCIA process here in the Diocese of Yakima.  Kindly review this letter and be sure it gets to your key RCIA leadership in your local parish.  Click here to read.
