LETTER TO THE EDITOR
February 17, 2005

I am writing in reference to your story regarding yesterday’s protest at my office by Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), as it appeared in the Yakima Herald-Republic’s edition of February 17th.
I regret that SNAP members came to my office during the lunch hour when the office was closed. Every individual who has identified himself/herself as a victim of sexual misconduct by a cleric of the Yakima Diocese has been contacted by me personally or by a representative of the diocese. The diocese has offered appropriate help to every victim if they desired it.
Ms. Rose Yates Lamey who appeared in the photo on your front page claims that the diocese has not responded to her claims of abuse. Presently, out of genuine concern for her well being, the diocese is paying for therapy received by Ms. Lamey. Sometime ago when I contacted Ms. Mary Yates Smith who also was in your front page photo, she told me she did not wish to pursue the matter further. She has not contacted me since then.
As the Bishop of Yakima, I regret the pain caused to anyone who was abused by a cleric of the Diocese and I am ready to help anyone who identifies themselves by calling 1-888-276-4490. This is a strictly confidential sexual abuse hotline.
