In 1833, the first Society of St. Vincent de Paul began. It is an international organization that is still alive and well 170 years later, and still very much in need. In 1970, with the appointment of Frank McGree by Bishop Cornelius Powers, the Diocese of Yakima established the first of what has become a network of retail stores. Their mission was, and still is today, to establish a network of stores to provide inexpensive used clothing and houshold goods to those most in need. The Stores have grown to multiple locations throughout the Diocese of Yakima and now offer social service support in the way of emergency assistance, referrals to emergency housing and even a food bank in the Union Gap store.

In the early 1980s, responding to a shortage of mattress donations, the Sunnyside store began manufacturing its own mattresses. Today, this operation provides the entire network with mattresses to sell to the public.

With approximately 600 people visiting the stores daily, well over 100, 000 people visit the Stores each year
