October 14, 2011

Dear Father:

The Gospel of Matthew coming up on the Thirtieth Sunday of Ordinary Time center on the great command of love.  It is interesting to note that a “scholar of the law” is the one to step forward and ask Jesus which of the commandments is the greatest.

Why attend to this little detail in this Gospel?  For so many today, the Church and its teachings seem like a series of rules meant to limit our freedom.   It’s kind of like that television commercial for “Singular One” commercial with David Spade: No No No No No No No No!  Yet, by proposing love as the measure of all teaching, Jesus is uplifting the teaching itself – not as a limit to freedom – but a mean to a moral and spiritual excellence.

Perhaps one of the reasons so many confuse “freedom” with “freedom” from rules is that the “freedom” increasingly active in civil society is a freedom devoid of meaning, a freedom that take note only of the tangible and visible, a freedom that uses reason in all matters, except the matters of the heart: God – God who is Love.

Freedom cannot be reduced to traffic lights for the moral life.  Nor can it be reduced to a series of “civil rights” – a kind of rules of the road for society.  Nor can it be a series of parliamentary procedures that keep democracy moving and keep the economies of world’s nations in fiscal health.   Certainly, good moral order, civil rights, personal civility, civic civility, and open trade policies that allow the free flow of good are all important.  But if all we expect of “freedom” is a loveless “freedom” of rules for the social road, then we expect too little from life.

What would our lives look like if animating by this far more robust notion of a freedom animated by love – kept alive literally by a God who is love?  I could not but help recall a wonderful lunch conversation I had with Father Pulido and Father Dufner at the end of our Priest Convocation.  It centered on the Gospel notion: “love of neighbor.”  The question at the lunch table was how to bridge the Spanish speaking community – often a younger community with lots of children – with an aging English speaking community.

So many of the English speaking folks have children who’ve went to college and left the area for better paying jobs in more urban areas.  Meanwhile, the growth industry in our area has been agriculture attracting folks from Mexico and Latin America over the last several decades changing the racial, cultural and linguistic composition.  The Diocese of Yakima and its 42 parishes have been at the center of this change with parishes often housing two communities: a younger Hispanic community and an older community of third and fourth generation Europeans of French and German ancestry who now speak English.

Father Pulido told a moving story of a woman – and English speaking woman – who’d stood up at a parish meeting regarding the need to split one of the parish programs into English and Spanish pleading to Spanish speakers, “I’m one of your family.”

I could not help but recall an elderly white woman in my old neighborhood of South Seattle.  Our religious education coordinator (a volunteer) would assign all the first communion children (almost all non-white) to one of the older parishioners (almost all elderly white) as prayer partners.  This elderly woman was assigned a young boy from a Vietnamese family.  She, like the others, was instructed to pray for the young boy.  The prayer partners were invited to be with the rest of the family at first communion, attend a couple of the parent classes, and get to know the family.  (Yes, we also did all the background checks!)

The elderly woman broke her leg.  The little boy found out and immediately told his parents.  The parents and the boy came over.  They did her grocery shopping.  They helped with yard work.  They did simple chores.  She not only remained that boy’s prayer partner.  She became part of their family.

Jesus uplifts love of God and love of neighbor as the two great commandments because love is what brings excellence to the many duties, tasks and demands of daily life.  Like that Vietnamese young boy, his family and that elderly woman, we have opportunities for this kind of excellence in community living right here in our own parishes here in Central Washington.  And I am certain the same kind of pastoral community building exist here in the Diocese of Yakima.  But do we know where?  Which parishes?  What’s your parish story?  Can we begin to share our best practices on building community within our parishes – even across the divides of language and culture?

As David Valdivia launches the new website with its forums, this column will be anchoring one of those forums – a forum on building community across the language lines.  Be sure to start collecting the ways you’ve been able to live the great commandment of Jesus to love God and love neighbor.

With every best wish and blessing,

Yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Joseph J. Tyson

Bishop of Yakima

With all this said here are the items I’d like to highlight for you this week.

Deacon Formation:

We had a very good meeting of the Executive Committee of the Presbyteral Council.  Some discussion took place regarding the role of the Deacons in light of the third edition of the Roman Missal.  Your regional representatives may wish to review with you your own experience with the deacons.  I am resending my notes from the deacon day so you can have them for your discussion.  Clickheretoview.

Priest Convocation:

At the Executive Committee of the Presbyteral Council, the top priority was a review of the first year entry plan I developed as the new bishop of Yakima.  This will be a document your regional representatives will be reviewing with you for input and comment.  Clickheretoview.

Save the Date For Next Year’s Catechetical Day: Saturday October 13th 2012

We are now setting the date for next year's catechetical day.  It is Saturday October 13th 2012 at Holy Family parish in Yakima.   We had quite a time getting people to register and getting parishes wrapped around the date this year.

Save the Date for Next Year’s Youth Catechesis Day: Friday October 12th 2012

Because the second Friday of October, the students in most schools are away and most teachers are away, we are adding an afternoon catechetical session for ADULTS WORKING WITH YOUTH.  We are also looking to that day and evening to have various YOUTH RETREATS.

Save the date for Next’s Year’s School Teacher In-Service: Friday October 12th 2012

Like this year, next year's Catholic School Teacher in-service lands on the second Friday of October.  However, there will be afternoon workshops for both catechists and teachers.

Save the date for Next’s Year’s Convocation in Yakima for Priests: Wednesday October 10th to Friday October 12th 2012

These dates will allow us to share speakers for our priest gathering and thread them forward into our catechetical and Catholic school workshops.  Monsignor Ecker will be working on hotel details.

Save the date for Next’s Year’s Employee Health Check: Friday October 12th 2012

Christian Brothers insurance will provide flu shots and screening FREE and covered by our insurance if we have a critical number of people which we should have by pulling these various diocesan events together.

Save the date for Next’s Year’s Pastoral Musician Workshop: Saturday October 13th 2012

We are now setting the date for next year's pastoral musician’s workshop.  It is Saturday October 13th 2012 at Holy Family parish in Yakima.   We had a wonderful turn out from about half of our parishes this year.  We will be doing some initial planning for this pastoral musician workshop this coming November so be sure to contact Mary Smith at mary.smith@holyfamilyyakima.org if you’d like to have input into the planning.

Mass for Deceased Bishops, Priests and Deacons of Diocese:

As you are well aware, each year we host a Mass to remember, celebrate and pray for those in ordained ministry who have served our Diocese of Yakima.

This year’s celebration will be held here at St. Paul Cathedral on Wednesday evening, November 9th at 5:30 p.m.  Priests are invited and encouraged to concelebrate and all deacons to vest and assist at the Mass.  The Mass will be followed by a dinner at our parish for all of you.  Stoles will be provided for all concelebrants and assisting deacons.  To permit us to prepare adequately for the dinner, we need you to respond before Sunday, November 6th either by phone at 509-575-3713 or e-mail at parish@stpaulyakima.org regarding your intention to join us.

We look forward to joining with you for this special Mass.

Please insert in your bulletins the following notice during the weekends of October 23rd and 20th and November 6th

You are invited to join with Bishop Tyson, the priests and deacons of the Diocese of Yakima in our Annual Mass for Deceased Bishops, Priests and Deacons, who have served in our Diocese on Wednesday, November 9th at 5:30 p.m. at St. Paul Cathedral in Yakima.  Please join us as we remember, celebrate, honor, and pray for those who have died.

Advocate Training Workshop:

Canon 1481,§1 refers to the appointment of Advocates. It is important that we minister effectively to those parties seeking a declaration of nullity and reconciliation following civil divorce.  Continuing education is a necessity for those who serve in that capacity.

A one day Advocate Training Workshop has been scheduled for Saturday November 5, 2011. This workshop will be for beginning and intermediate/advanced, English and bilingual speaking, advocates and will be presented by the Office of Canonical Concerns staff.  Advanced registration is required for planning purposes.

The workshop will begin at 8:30 a.m. with coffee and a light continental breakfast.  The morning presentation, beginning at 9:15, will focus on beginning advocates, those who have had no training.  Lunch will be served in the Diocesan kitchen from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m.  In the afternoon we will focus on the intermediate/advanced advocates and concentrate on the petition/libellus, advocate brief and case studies.  The session will end by 4:30 p.m. allowing those who wish to attend Saturday evening Mass the opportunity to go to the 5:00 p.m. Mass at Holy Family Parish.

There will be a $10.00 fee for this workshop to cover the cost of materials.  Payment can be sent with registration or made the day of the workshop.  Advocates who cannot afford this fee are being asked to contact their parish priest.

Please share this information with any person already an advocate and any person whom you would like to act in this capacity for your parish. The goal is to have at least one or more trained advocate in each parish throughout the diocese.  Priests and Deacons are also encouraged to attend.  Please complete and return the registration form below by no later than October 21, 2011.

RCIA Workshop:

By now, I hope you have registered for the workshop on the Rite for Christian Initiation of Adults.  It is important for the effective initiation of our new Catholics. Presenters will be from the North American Forum on the Catechumenate, an organization with offices in Washington D.C.

The workshop is on Friday and Saturday, October 21st and 22nd, at Holy Family Parish.  The registration fee is $80.00, payable to the Diocese of Yakima. Priests are urged to attend at least on Friday at $50.00 for the single day.  The program begins at 9:00 a.m., both days.

To register, go to www.RCIAyakima.org

The Official Catholic Directory Report:

Clergy Clearance Policies:

As we work to refine our policies and procedures for providing clearance for clergy and laity, either visiting our diocese or seeking permission to minister outside the diocese, I’d like to share a couple of new forms that have been developed that you should start using immediately.

The first is for requesting a testimonial of good standing from another diocese for a priest or deacon coming to minister in our diocese.  The form should be submitted as completely as possible and submitted to this office at least one month, and preferably two months or more in advance to allow adequate time to request the information from the visiting clergy’s bishop or religious superior.  Bishop Tyson will not grant permission for visiting clergy to minister in the diocese without a testimonial.

1.       RequestforguestPriestorDeaconForm

The second form is for requesting a testimonial of good standing for our priests and deacons when they have been invited to minister outside the diocese.  This form should only be used if the diocese being visited will not be requesting a testimonial directly from the Bishop’s Office.  Please check with the pastor or religious superior to see what their policies and procedures might be.  Again, the more time we have to process these requests, the better we will be able to ensure that it is done in time to meet the requirements of the diocese where clergy will be visiting.

2.       ClergyrequestMinistryoutsideDioceseForm

Please note that we are no longer able to issue general notices valid for up to one year.  Notices sent within the United States must specify the date and purpose of ministry outside the diocese.  For ministry outside the United States, we can issue a celebret card valid for the period of time you will be away.

Thank you for your cooperation.
