Our History

  •     Catholicism first came to Central Washington in 1847.
  •     The Diocese of Yakima was created on June 23, 1951, by Pope Pius XII.
  •     The new diocese was formed from the territory of the Archdiocese of Seattle and the Diocese of Spokane.
  •     The Diocese of Yakima serves 41 parishes in 7 counties.
  •     The original diocesan newspaper began as Our Times in 1959.

Death of José A. Villanueva Sr.

The funeral services for José A. Villanueva Sr. have been finalized.  Mr. Villanueva is the father of Mario Villanueva, former director of Catholic Charities Housing Services, and father-in-law of Jane Villanueva, our former Chancellor.

The Vigil and Rosary are at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside today, with viewing at 4 p.m. and Rosary at 6 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, August 28 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside.  Bishop Emeritus Carlos A. Sevilla, S.J., will preside.

José A. Villanueva Sr., the father of Mario Villanueva, former director of Catholic Charities Housing Services, and father-in-law of Jane Villanueva, our former Chancellor, died this morning, August 23, at Emerald Care Nursing Home in Wapato, where he has been in residence the past few years.  He was 85.  He is survived by his wife, Beatríz Villanueva, and many children and grandchildren.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Joseph Parish in Sunnyside sometime next week.  Please keep the Villanueva family in your prayers.
