Our History

  •     Catholicism first came to Central Washington in 1847.
  •     The Diocese of Yakima was created on June 23, 1951, by Pope Pius XII.
  •     The new diocese was formed from the territory of the Archdiocese of Seattle and the Diocese of Spokane.
  •     The Diocese of Yakima serves 41 parishes in 7 counties.
  •     The original diocesan newspaper began as Our Times in 1959.

Bishop Tyson Announces Reappointments

Bishop Joseph J. Tyson, D.D. has reappointed the following and ordered this information to be published:

Rev. Msgr. Jack A. Ecker as Vicar General;

Mrs. Elvia Gonzalez as Vice-Chancellor and Executive Administrator;

Very Rev. Michael  J. Ibach as Judicial Vicar;

Rev.  Msgr. Robert M. Siler as Chancellor, Chief of Staff and Moderator of the Curia and Episcopal Vicar.

Rev. Tomás Vázquez Téllez as Director of Youth Catechesis and Hispanic Catechesis;

Bishop Joseph J. Tyson D.D. also announced the appointments of the following priests as Vicars and ordered it to be published:

Very Rev. Osmar R. Aguirre Vicar for Parish Life;

Very Rev. Jaime H. Chacón Vicar for Hispanic Education Ministries;

Very Rev. Thomas C. Champoux Vicar for Charities;

Very Rev. Thomas S. Kuykendall  Vicar for Catholic Schools;

Very Rev. Felipe Pulido Vicar for Vocations.

These appointments took effect on July 1, 2012.
