Our History

  •     Catholicism first came to Central Washington in 1847.
  •     The Diocese of Yakima was created on June 23, 1951, by Pope Pius XII.
  •     The new diocese was formed from the territory of the Archdiocese of Seattle and the Diocese of Spokane.
  •     The Diocese of Yakima serves 41 parishes in 7 counties.
  •     The original diocesan newspaper began as Our Times in 1959.

Fall ‘Canonization Pilgrimage’ Planned

Bishop Joseph Tyson will serve as spiritual director of a fall pilgrimage to Rome, marking the canonization of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha.

The nine-day trip, which departs on October 18, will include attendance at the canonization Mass at St. Peter’s, a General Papal Audience with Pope Benedict XVI, tours of the four Major Basilicas in Rome, and a day trip to Assisi, among other highlights.
